The science of focus

Why the Pomodoro Technique works

The Pomodoro Technique, created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, breaks study time into focused 25-minute blocks separated by short breaks. Each block is called a “pomodoro.” By committing to just one 25-minute stretch at a time, a huge assignment stops feeling overwhelming and starts feeling doable.

Short, timed sprints work because your brain can only hold deep concentration for so long. Knowing a break is coming keeps motivation high and makes it far easier to start — and starting is the hardest part of studying. The countdown also creates gentle time pressure that crowds out distractions like your phone or social media.

After four pomodoros you take a longer 15-minute break to let your mind fully recharge. Over a study session this rhythm of focus and rest helps you retain more, avoid burnout, and actually finish your homework instead of endlessly putting it off.
